Crocus

Os meus crocus começaram a aparecer.
Os primeiros foram os violeta, hoje tinha um amarelo e os brancos já espreitam também.
Espero que a chuva não os estrague. Eles não duram muito, mas com chuvas fortes ficam rapidamente estragados.
A Primavera está próxima!

My Crocuses started to bloom. The violet first, today one yellow and the whites are almost open. I hope the rain doesn't ruin them. They don't last much but with heavy rain the get completely damaged.
Spring is near.

Azul / Blue

Comprada em flor em Setembro, abriu hoje outra flor na mesma haste. Assim que secar vou cortar a haste para que a planta guarde energia para a próxima floração.

Bought in flower last September. Today it bloomed again from the same spike. After it fade, I'm going to cut the spike off to help the plant gain energy for the next flowering.


Orquídea Nr. 57

Dendrobium moniliforme

Ofereceram-me esta orquídea em Novembro e, passados poucos meses, já deu um belo cacho de flores.
O nome não está totalmente correcto pois todos os moniliformes que encontro são totalmente brancos. Não consigo descobrir o nome deste clone.

A friend gave me this orchid just last November and it's already in bloom. The name is not tottally correct as all the D. moniliforme that I can find are tottally white. This must be a different clone wich I can't find the wright name.

Exposição de Camélias no Porto

Organizada pela secção portuguesa da Sociedade Internacional das Camélias, o Porto terá nos próximos dias 1 e 2 de Março (sábado e domingo) a sua Exposição de Camélias.

Será no antigo edifício da Faculdade de Ciências (e actual reitoria da Universidade do Porto), à Praça dos Leões. Como já sucedeu nas duas últimas edições, trata-se de uma exposição e não de um concurso. Mas é sempre uma óptima oportunidade para conversar com quem cultiva (e, em certos casos, também vende) a mais admirável flor dos nossos jardins. A abertura ao público da exposição é às 14h00 de sábado.

Euphorbia

O ano passado, num dos últimos passeios para fotografar orquídeas silvestres, trouxe para casa um pequena planta de Euphorbia que gostei muito e não sabia tão comum em Portugal

De início, levou uns meses até se estabelecer e houve uma altura em que pensei que a ia perder. Mas depois, cresceu tão rápido que fiquei maravilhado.

Não sei a espécie mas, agora que está florida, fico contente por estar tão bonita. Todos os dias fico um bocadinho a admira-la.

Last year in one of the walks to photograph wild orchids, organised by Lusorquideas, I took home a small plant of this Euphorbia wich I loved and didn't know they were so common in Portugal.

At first it took a few months to settle and there was a time when I thought I was going to loose it. But them, quietly she grew so fast I was amazed by it.

I do not know wich species it is but now, that it's in bloom, I'm very happy that it's looking so nice. Every day I stop a few seconds by it to admire it.

Chuva / Rain

Finalmente chegou a chuva!

Depois de algumas semanas de um frio seco, hoje levantei-me cedo e o céu estava cinzento e não estava tanto frio.

Perto do meio dia começou a chover.

After a few weeks of dry cold weather, today I woke up to see a grey sky and not so cold.

Near noon it was rainning.

Dear Friend & Gardener

Tive conhecimento deste livro através do GARDEN BLOGGERS BOOK CLUB.

Este livro é uma colecção de cartas trocadas por dois jardineiros e amigos, Beth Chatto e Christopher Lloyd num periodo de 2 anos (1996-97).

Adorei o livro. Não conhecia nenhum dos seus autores nem os seus jardins ou os livros publicados por ambos. Gostei de os 'conhecer'. Tive pena de saber que Christopher Lloyd já faleceu, mas gostava de conhecer o seu legado, o jardim Great Dixter. Dos dois, Christo pareceu-me a personagem mais fascinante.

Um livro muito british, cómico, educativo. Definitivamente para quem gosta de jardinagem.

O único ponto negativo foi saber, no fim do livro, que as cartas foram escritas com o propósito de serem publicadas em livro o que tira um pouco a expontaniedade das cartas. No entanto, estão lá as opiniões sobre jardinagem, os comentários sobre vários jardins e experiências nos jardins dos autores, o passar das estações e muito muito mais.

Tudo isto tornou a leitura desta obra muito agradavel.

I've heard about this book at the GARDEN BLOGGER'S BOOK CLUB.

This is a collection of letters between two english gardener friends, Beth Chatto and Christopher Lloyd in a period of two years (1996-97).

I loved the book. Didn't know any of the authors, their gardens or their written work. I loved to 'meet' them in this book. I was sorry to know that Christopher Lloyd passed away a few years ago but I would love to visit his garden, still open to public. From the two authors, Christo looked the most fascinating character.

It's a very british book. Funny and entertaining. Definetly to gardening lovers.

The only negative thing I have to say was about knowing, at the end, that the letters were written thinking of beeing published in a book. It takes a bit of the expontaneous aspect of it. But the best is there, the gardening opinions, the garden comentaries and experiencies on the author's own gardens, the different seasons passing by and a lot more.

All of this made the reading of this book a complete pleasure.

Celebração / Celebrate

A minha mãe ofereceu-me esta orquídea, um Zygopetalum 'everspring', quando me mudei para a nova casa, está a fazer um ano. E aqui está ela florida de novo a celebrar o primeiro aniversário da casa nova!
Elegante, não é??

My mum gave me this orchid, a Zigopetalum 'everspring', when I mooved to this house almost one year ago. And there it is celebrating my first year here with a very elegant flower.

Chorões / 'Crying babies'

É o nome que lhe dão na minha terra. No passado fim-de-semana fui até lá e gostei de os ver com estas cores ainda Outonais... Ninguém lhes disse que o Inverno já tinha chegado há muito???

'Crying babies' is the name people from my hometown call them. Last weekend I went back home to visit my parents and saw this plants with a autumn colours. No one told them winter is here a long time ago??

Os bolbos que plantei ainda estão muito atrasados!!
Mas ficam muito bonitos no jardim.

Aren't they beautiful? Yes, but I bought them in a garden center.
The bulbs I planted are still very delay.

Já foi enviado aos sócios da Associação Portuguesa de Orquidofilia o primeiro número do boletim bimestral da associação.
Estou um bocadinho orgulhoso pois sou o editor deste boletim e sempre é o meu 'menino' que sai das minhas mãos para o mundo.

It was sent to the members of the Portuguese Orchid Society the first number of its bulletin. I'm a bit proud as I'm the editor. It's like sending a son to the world.

Calathea crocata

A Calathea crocata que plantei no hall de entrada do meu prédio está novamente a florir. Pela primeira vez uma planta destas floresce pela segunda vez nas minhas mãos.
Tive uma vários anos mas nunca voltou a florir.
Talvez as condições de luz da entrada do prédio sejam as ideais para incentivar a floração.

The Calathea crocata that I planted in the entrance of my flat building is in bloom again. For the first time I had a plant like this that flowered for the second time.
I had one for a few years when I was living with my parents that never flowered again.
Maybe the light of the entrance is ideal to promote flowering.

Violeta Africana (Híbrido)

Eu estava a conter-me com as violetas. Há tantas cores, tão bonitas... Nem queria olhar muito para elas para não cair na tentação.
Há umas semanas troquei um keiki de uma orquídea com um amigo e ele mandou-me, juntamente com a orquídea, uma pequena violeta (saintpaulia ionanthe). E pronto. Começou...
Hoje ia a passar por uma florista e vi esta a olhar para mim. É tão bonita! Tive que a trazer comigo...

I was trying no to look at the saintpaulias. So many varieties, so many colours, so lovelly.
A few weeks ago I trade a orchid keiki with a friend and he also send me a small saintpaulia. And that's it. Here I go...
Today I was passing by a flower shop and this beauty was looking at me and I had to bring it home...

Trabalho no jardim / Work in the garden

Este mês tenho estado mais tempo do que o habitual no jardim. Tenho até aproveitado algumas horas de almoço para trabalhar um pouco no jardim.

Em Janeiro há muito que fazer. Não são só limpezas. As Fuchsias e as Roseiras precisam de ser podadas e as estacas plantadas, há muita folhagem para ser retirada, bolbos para voltarem para a terra, vasos para serem limpos e plantas para serem reenvasadas, enfim, muito trabalho.

Com a chuva que tem caído, as fuchsias estão todas a rebentar. Acho que para o ano vou pensar em podar umas duas semanas mais cedo, logo no inicio do ano ou final de Dezembro.

Também já estou a descobrir onde é que as sementes de Lobélias, Amores-Perfeitos e Malmequeres foram aterrar pois já vejo vasos cheios de pequenas plantinhas. Muitas delas em vasos onde não deveriam estar, por isso têm que ser plantadas em outro sítio.

Entretanto deixo-vos a foto de uma Fuchsia que plantei em Outubro e que floriu recentemente.

This month I've been really busy in the garden. Even in my lunch break I often work there a little.
In January there's a lot to do in the garden.
The Fuchsias and Rose bushes need prunning, there are leaves to clean off the floor, bulbs to put back on hearth, pots to be clean and plants to plant in bigger pots, anyway, lots to do.
With all the rain from last weeks, the Fuchsias are growing new leaves very fast. Maybe next year I'll do the prunning 2 or 3 weeks earlier.
I'm also finding many new plants growing in the wrong places. I guess there were seeds from Lobelias and Pansies blown away to the wrong pots. Those must be mooved to their own pots.

Uma Flor Miserável / A Lousy Flower

Era uma vez uma Catleya pelórica que deu três botões.
um deles, quando eu os descobri, tocava numa folha e, além de ter nascido torto por causa da folha, o contacto acumulou humidade e o botão 'torto' caiu.
Um mês depois, já com os botões quase a abrir, fui dar com um deles metade comido. Uma lesma 'amiguinha' fez-me esse lindo favor e o botão lá secou e caiu dois dias depois.
Cacei a lesma e mudei o vaso de sítio não fosse ela ter a família por perto. Só restava um botão.
No dia que abriu, a condensação fez com que uma grossa gota de àgua caisse na petala e ficou com um aspecto de 'ratada'...
E foi assim que a minha espera para ver uma das minhas Catleyas pelóricas em flor resultou ... numa flor miserável.
Para o ano haverá mais!!!

Once upon a time there was a peloric Catleya with three flower buds. One fell off after beeing in contact with a leaf and with the moist, became rotten.

A month later, almost starting to open, the second bud was half-eaten by a very 'cute' slug.

Thinking that the slugs' familly might be around, I moove the pot to another shelf as my plant only had one bud left.

It finally opened but a big drop of water ruin it. It looks like someone gave a big bite in one of the petals.

And that was the sad story of this plant wich I will have to wait another year to see a perfect flower.

A minha Camélia / My Camelia

Abriu hoje a primeira flor. Comprei a planta sem flor. Foi uma das primeiras que comprei para a casa nova. Desta vez não fui enganado. É mesmo igual à foto da etiqueta.
É bonita, não é???

It bloomed today. I bought this small plant last year without flower. One of the first new plants I bought last year when I moved. This time I was not tricked, the flower is just like the one in the label. Pretty, isn't it?

A minha Estufa / My Conservatory

Como podem ver, passados quase seis meses, a minha estufa está bastante mais cheia. E tenho umas idéias para aproveitar melhor o espaço.

As you can see, after almost 6 months, my conservatory has much more plants. And I have some ideas to get more space out of it!

Begónias

Este ano espero mostrar aqui algumas Begónias. São plantas com as quais vim a simpatizar por influência de uma amiga. Sinceramente, as que conhecia não me atraiam muito mas agora que 'fui apresentado' a algumas menos comuns, fiquei encantado!

This year I plan to show here a few begonias. I started to get aquaintence of this plants just last year by the influence of a friend. The species I knew didn't appeal to me much but as I saw some uncommon species, I was hooked!

Oncidium Twinkle Red Fantasy

Uma plantinha encantadora que dá muitas flores. A planta não é muito grande e as florinhas são muito bonitas e perfumadas.
É fácil de cultivar, deram-me um corte em março do ano passado e a planta cresceu bastante e deu três hastes florais carregadas de flores como podem ver.

A Charming little plant with lots of flowers. The plant isn't very big and the small flowers are very preety and scented.
It's easy to take care. A friend gave me a cut with three pseudobulbs and it grew very fast. Las December it gave three floral steams with a large number of flowers as you can see.
