Chelsea Flower Show 2010

Just returned from Chelsea Flower Show and I can say that England really is the country of the gardens. The exhibition was great. I was there in 2004 and loved to get back and see the evolution of garden plants and all the business involved. I'll leave you a few photos from the event. I'll put some more in the next few days as I took more than 800 photos...
numa confortavel 'cebola'...

Nova Phalaenopsis

A new Phalaenopsis in my collection. An offer from a friend. The flowers have about 6cm wide and they're glossy and with a good shape. The purple colour (fuchsia) is lovelly.
This hybrid was not identified but by the shape of the buds and stems, it looks like a relative from Phalaenopsis violacea.

Fim-de-semana no Alentejo

Papoilas (género Papaver)

A visitar a família e amigos. Bendita chuva do passado Inverno.

Travelling to the South visiting my familly and friends. The fields look beautifull, with so many different colours, thanks to all the rain the fell last Winter.

Bulbophyllum loherianum

This is an orchid that grows epiphyte in the Philippines. The plant is not that big. It has small pseudobulbs with four sides and ovate leafs.
They like hot and humid climats (tropical / temperate humid).
This plant is with me for two years now. This year, this is the second time it blooms.
It's very interesting to watch the development of the flowers.

Saxifraga urbium 'Variegata'

I'm passionate about these alpine plants called Saxifragas. The plant is not that special but the flowers are just adorable. The first Saxifraga of my collection is also my favourite, the Saxifraga stolonifera. They're not easy to find at the garden centers so I was delighted to see this Saxifraga urbium 'Variegata' at a local garden center.
I really don't know much about these plants. I need time to search for a good book about them. One of these days, I promise.

I've had this rose bush for three years now. I bought it very small and soon it grew fast around the arch where it stands. I've never cutted it much, only the steams that want to go out of the arch. I really don't know what to do with it. Shall I cutted severelly or just continue trimming the steams that grow outside the arch?
The roses are white but while in bud they have a pink shade. They are lightly scented.

Maybe the last Daffodils of the season but you never know. There's always the chance of a late bloomer. In the end of this post, a poem from the english poet William Wordsworth.

"Daffodils" (1804)
I WANDER'D lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretch'd in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:
I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Garden Queen

A minha gata Farruska é a rainha do jardim.

This is my cat Farruska. She's the queen of the garden. She pretends she's very light while wandering about the garden and ruining a few plants.
If I tell her something, she just looks me with her bright copper eyes.
Here in her trone, beside the plaque in her honour. 'GARDEN QUEEN'.

Sweet

Assim, aqui fica a ficha técnica completa:
Nome do híbrido: Cymbidium Sweet Devon 'Sweet'

Thanks to my friend Bruno, it has been confirmed that this Cymbidium is an hybrid from the two species Cymbidium suave and Cymbidium devonianum.
This hybrid's name is Cymbidium Sweet Devon 'Sweet'
An awarded plant from American Orchid Society in 2008.
As a curiosity, here's the description of the awarded plant, by the AOS judges:

'One thousand twenty-three flowers and 200 buds on 25 arched to pendent inflorescences almost encircling a remarkably well-grown plant 90 cm in diameter grown in a 20-cm pot; inflorescences extended well beyond bottom of the pot; sepals pale yellow-green overlaid burgundy to appear olive green, narrow pale yellow-green picotee; petals pale yellow-green finely stippled burgundy, deeper centrally, narrow pale yellow-green picotee; lip deep burgundy; substance heavy; texture matte. Clematis 'The President'

Pela cor, parece-me ser o híbrido 'The President'.

This year, my Clematis are beeing very generous and giving multiple flowers. I'd been told that they are just like that. In the first two years they give one or two flowers and then the show begins!
This looks like the hybrid 'The President', wich I bought two years ago in a supermarket. In the photo you can see the first flower to open. It has a few more buds.
The Clematis 'Ville de Lyon' also promises a good group of flowers. I'll try to show them here in full bloom.

Rosas

These Roses are pictured here every year. The buds start as with orange and red colour and, as the flower opens, the colours change to pink. When the flower is almost finished the rose is completly dark-pink.
The original plant was bought by my mother more than 20 years ago and many cuttings were taken that originated new baby plants.
In my house in Lisbon I have two of these wich are mature and flowering with all its strenght right now.

Sprekelia formosissima

A minha 'Flor-de-Lis' abriu hoje.

This is my Sprekelia formosissima. The flower just openned today. In the morning sun, it glowed like blood among the green surroundings. This plant comes from the rocky slopes of Guatemala and Mexico. It's was named after the german botanist J.H. Sprekelsen, from the eighteenth-century.
It doesn't like to have its roots disturbed, so its better to leave it all year round in its pot. Mine is outside all year and in the same pot for the past three years.
In one of her books, the bulb specialist Anna Pavord explained very well the position of the six petals of the flower: 'The top three petals bend back on themselves at three, nine and twelve o'clock. The lower petals dropping sweeping away to five, six and seven o'clock.'

Christopher Lloyd - His Life at Great Dixter

A great book about a great Gardener.
I had read his words on the book 'Dear friend and Gardener' (with Beth Chatto)and was sad to discover, by that time, that he was already dead.
This year I was happy to know that a Biography had been written about the Man and the Garden.
What a great joy was to know closely this english character and his thoughts about gardening and life. He was a master gardener and wrote many books on gardening with his ideas from Great Dixter, his garden, and...more A great book about a great Gardener.

The book also shows us a bit of the Gardening World in England, wich is very interesting, from an English Gardens's admirer point of view.

Next step, read a few of Christopher Lloyd's books and visit Great Dixter, still open to the public, and breath a few nostalgic memories from the place.

Sparaxis

Sparaxis tricolor

This are my first Sparaxis. Unfortunatly the wind from last days ruined them. Lets hope better luck for the ones still to open.
Sparaxis are small bulb plants from South Africa. They are very easy to grow. They need full sun and soil with good drainage. The flowers bloom from Spring to early Summer. For now I only have Sparaxis tricolor but I'm searching for different species or hybrids. Maybe I'll find something at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Nova no meu jardim. / New in my garden.

Vento e Iris

It's a windy day in Lisbon and the long stem flowers might be on the floor by the end of the day due to strong winds. Thankfully I had already taken a few pictures of my yellow Irises.

A tradição explicada no blog Seasonal Wisdom.

May Day celebrations are unknow in Portugal. What a shame!
As you can see in the blog Garden Variety, Annapolis (E.U.A.) has a contest for more than a century on doors decorated with only fresh flowers (artificial or dried flowers are not allowed).
The tradition is well explain in the blog Seasonal Wisdom.
